The future is threatening to us all.
The world has quickly become much more vulnerable to the widespread outbreak
of both new and old infectious diseases. Our increased vulnerability is
not mysterious when you consider the unknown effects of our advances in
technology coupled with the encroaching population and global travel. What
troubles me is our mysteriously shocked attitudes when we are confronted
with the powerful and often deadly world of microbes. This series, titled
Infectionscapes, is a questioning and examination of the imbalance
between the microbiotic environment and its relationship within our macrocosmic
world.
I use my camera like a microscope focusing on scenes and circumstances that
strike me as being related to the enemies we host. I approach painting like
a scientist. I begin painting by experimenting with different organic media,
watching for chemical reactions on the surface of the photograph. I then
work back into the surfaces, highlighting the contours and creating the
specific attributes of the diseases.
